A man who was already in custody escaped from the Cabell County Courthouse, but he didn't make it far.

Huntington Police had brought in the suspect, David Eugene Tackett, on a burglary charge a little after 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Magistrate Johnny McCallister says the officer who brought the suspect in was handing McCallister paperwork. Then the janitor alerted them the suspect was heading out the door. The officer then took off after him.

"He's a big man, a big cop, and I’ve never seen him move like a rocket,” McCallister said. “I mean, he was on that guy like stink on a hippie. He was out of here, and I'm pretty sure he's the one that got him."

Other police were called in. Tackett was caught in the courthouse lawn by 4th Avenue.

One of the courthouse employees said it was almost comical to see him running with his hands cuffed behind his back.

Police say Wednesday morning Tackett broke into an apartment along 6th Avenue and stole some items.

Now he'll be facing an additional charge for this short-lived escape.

According to court documents, Tackett had just gotten out of jail on bond Tuesday on a separate obstructing charge.
