The last time there was a government shutdown in 1995 the National Mall in DC was not closed!

The war memorials in DC are OUTSIDE!  Why then would a government shutdown require them to be closed???  Sure, turn the lights out.  Turn the fountains off.  Tell the guards to go home!

But instead, the Obama Administration has ordered the park police to barricade the entry ways!

Obama behind 'barrycades' at WWII monument

I wonder what costs the government more?  Doing nothing or staffing the mall with police to block veterans from visiting THEIR memorials?

Thankfully the Honor Flights, carrying WW II and other veterans to DC, continue in spite of Obama!

The government shut down at midnight earlier this morning, closing memorials in the nation's capital - but, some visiting veterans weren't taking "no" for an answer.

GOP Reps Topple Barriers to Memorial So Veterans Can Enter During Shutdown

This battle is getting ugly, but this time there are some folks who have the Vets' backs!

Open WWII memorial or be sued, Obama told

An Honor Flight group out of Ohio has been warned they could face ARREST!

He says they are considering going ahead with the trip even if the government is still on shutdown, but when he called the parks service, he was told they would face arrest. "I said, are you kidding me? You're going to arrest a 90/91-year-old veteran from seeing his memorial? If it wasn't for them it wouldn't be there. She said, 'That's correct sir.'"

Democrat Senator says GOP members are just trying to score political points

The RNC has released the following:

RNC Will Pay To Keep WWII Memorial Open

Oct. 2, 2013

This afternoon RNC Chairman Reince Priebus visited the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC to announce that the Republican National Committee would cover the cost of keeping it open for the next 30 days. Blaming the government shutdown, the Obama administration ordered the memorial barricaded, keeping out World War II veterans who traveled to Washington from across the country. When the House Republicans proposed legislation to keep open the nation's parks and monuments, President Obama promised to veto it.

"The Obama administration has decided they want to make the government shutdown as painful as possible, even taking the unnecessary step of keeping the Greatest Generation away from a monument built in their honor," said Chairman Priebus.

"That's not right, and it's not fair. So the RNC has put aside enough money to hire five security personnel to keep this memorial open to veterans and visitors. Ideally, I'd hope to hire furloughed employees for this job.

"Seeing that the DNC has bragged about fundraising off of the government shutdown, I'd invite my counterpart, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, to join with us in keeping this memorial open.

"These brave Americans have sacrificed so much for our country. House Republicans have acted to keep parks and monuments open; Democrats are standing in the way. We want to do what we can, in the face of the intransigence from the White House, to support our veterans.

"If the White House complains that such action is not permitted, I'd simply remind them that their unilateral action to give exemptions from Obamacare to big business and their political allies wouldn't seem permissible either. If they can go to such lengths to protect their political interests, surely they can do something to support the interests of those who fought in World War II."
