Well the Cincinnati Reds completed a 3-game sweep over the Houston Astros, winning 6-5 in 13 innings last night, er this morning!
The Reds are a season-high 21 games over .500 and only a 1/2 game out of 2nd place, 2 1/2 out of first. The Reds begin a 3-game weekend series in Pittsburgh tomorrow night, 6:35 airtime on News Radio 800 WVHU.
Whatever happens in the remaining 9 games of the 2013 season, the Reds SHOULD be in the post-season, even if it is for only a one game wildcard.
So the question for Manager Dusty Baker is, Who gets left off the playoff roster? Right now the MLB rosters are expanded to 40 players. But playoff teams will have to cut down to 25 for the post-season.
Who do YOU think should make the 25-man roster for the Reds? Who gets left off?
Last night Reds super prospect CF Billy Hamilton made his first start, got his first hit, and became the first player in 92 years to steal 4 bases in his first start. Hamilton went 3-3 with 2 walks! He's been used by Baker in the stretch run as a pinch runner. And with his success on the base paths, Baker would be foolish to leave him off the post-season roster.
That throws a kink in the wheel for the Reds management. If you keep Hamilton, who can also play SS, then who do you leave off?
And what about the pitching staff? Surely Dusty wouldn't leave off starter Mike Leake this year, would he? What about taking Cueto and Marshall to the post-season? They've both been injured most of the season. Even though they seem to be throwing well now, do you take a chance with them in the playoffs? And, with a four-man rotation, will Cueto be a starter or come out of the pen?
And what about Tony Cingrani's injury?
Lots of questions! Ought to be interesting to see who makes it and who gets left off.
Here's what I think should be the post-season Reds roster:
Starters: Arroyo, Bailey, Leake, Latos
Bullpen: Cueto, Chapman, Hoover, Simon, LeCure, Parra, Marshall, Cingrani (if healthy)
Voto, Phillips, Cozart, Frazier, Hannahan
Choo, Bruce, Ludwick, Hamilton, Paul, Heisey
