I-64 East closed after deadly head-on crash in Huntington

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The eastbound lanes of I-64 remain closed at the 5th Street exit following a deadly head-on crash.

That portion of the interstate is expected to be closed until at least noon.

Huntington Police Chief Joe Ciccarelli says HPD got a call, around 4 a.m. Friday, of a driver going westbound in the eastbound lanes around the 17 mile marker.

Officers tried to intercept the car but the driver was going too fast for them to stop it.

The driver then collided head-on with a tractor trailer and he died at the scene. Police are considering alcohol as a factor in the crash but will need confirmation from an autopsy.

The tractor trailer was carrying a blasting agent but it is a stable material and will need to be removed to another truck before the scene can be cleared.
