Man charged with murder in Wayne County shooting

WAYNE COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A man is facing murder charges after he told investigators he shot another man after an argument.

Johnnie Walls, 44, of Wayne is charged with murder.

According to the criminal complaint, Walls shot the victim, Walter Toppins, 77, six times Tuesday morning at a home on Big Branch Road in Wayne where both men lived.

According to the criminal complaint, Walls said the two men had an argument Sunday that boiled over into Tuesday morning when the incident occurred.

Walls told investigators he and Toppins were having words and Toppins reached for something by the fireplace.

That's when Walls said he grabbed his handgun off his bedroom dresser and walked toward Toppins, firing his gun as he walked.

According to the criminal complaint, Toppins was shot in his back, arm and chest. Investigators found him lying in floor next to the entryway into the kitchen.

According to the criminal complaint, Walls called 911 after the shooting.

He was then arrested when investigators arrived on scene.

The victim's wife was home at the time of the shooting.
