Bill introduced to W.Va. House to include protect unborn from child neglect

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A bill has been introduced in the W.Va. House that would make unborn children protected under the state's child abuse and neglect laws.

House Bill 2710 would update the charge of child neglect causing death to include an unborn fetus that has reached 24 weeks of gestation.

The bill was introduced Monday by Delegate Jordan Hill of Nicholas County.

“West Virginians have a great respect for life and expect their government to protect and provide a voice for the unborn,” Delegate Hill said.

If convicted, the parent, guardian or custodian will spend 3-15 years in custody and have to pay a fine between $1,000-$5,000.

The bill has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee.
