Gusty winds and low humidity values will support the growth and spread of any uncontrolled or uncontained fires today through early this evening. Most susceptible will be fine fuels such as dead grasses and underbrush. Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Uncontrolled burning is not recommended through early evening. Consider postponing your burn until conditions improve.

...Elevated Wildfire Threat This Afternoon... Above normal temperatures combined with dry air remaining in place will lead to relative humidity values dropping to 15 to 25 percent this afternoon and early evening. Southwest winds of 10 to 15 mph with gusts of up to 20 to 25 mph will produce an elevated risk of spreading wildfires. Outdoor burning is discouraged this afternoon and evening. Remember, it is illegal to burn anything within 150 feet of any woodland or brushland between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. through the end of April.

...INCREASED FIRE DANGER EXPECTED TODAY... ...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 1 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO 8 PM EDT THIS EVENING FOR FOR CARTER AND GREENUP COUNTIES IN KENTUCKY... The National Weather Service in Charleston has issued a Red Flag Warning for low relative humidity, sustained winds up to 15 mph with 25 to 30 mph gusts, and low fuel moisture. This Red Flag Warning is in effect from 1 PM this afternoon to 8 PM EDT this evening. * Affected Area...Fire Weather Zone 101 Greenup and Fire Weather Zone 102 Carter. * Winds...Southwest 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 to 30 mph. * Timing...This afternoon and evening. * Relative Humidity...As low as 20 percent. * Temperatures...In the upper 70s and lower 80s. * Lightning...None * Impacts...The threat is enhanced in grassy and brush filled areas. Any fires that develop will spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged.

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now....or will shortly. A combination of strong winds...low relative humidity...and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.
