Charleston Police release name of shooting victim

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Charleston Police have identified the man killed in an overnight shooting on the West Side.

Bryant Johnson, 52, was shot and killed around 11:30 p.m. Sunday on 1st Avenue.

Charleston Police say they don't have a suspect at this time.

On Mayor Danny Jones’ Radio Show on WCHS 580, Lt. Cooper said witnesses told them the suspect had a mask on when the person entered the apartment. However, during a news conference he said he didn’t know for sure if there was a mask used.

Cooper also said that they are investigating robbery as a potential motive.

Detectives are currently following up on several angles Lt. Cooper says he just can’t talk about them right now.

Police spent nearly six hours speaking with family, friends, neighbors and witnesses to learn more about the victim and the possible shooter.

This is the fourth homicide in the city this year. Lt. Cooper says arrests have been made in the three previous murders. He says he hopes to make an arrest in last night’s murder soon.
