Caregiver charged after allegedly beating elderly blind man

LOGAN COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A caregiver is behind bars after she allegedly struck a blind man under her care in the face with a blunt object.

Tina Hatfield, 45, of Omar, is charged with malicious abuse of an incapacitated adult by a caregiver resulting in bodily injury, malicious assault and fleeing on foot.

According to the criminal complaint, troopers went to a home in the 8000 block of Jerry West Highway and found an elderly man with cuts, bruises and blood on his face.

The trooper also saw a metal broomstick with blood on it that was bent at one end.

The victim told State Police that Hatfield, who was his caregiver, went into his home and told him he "wouldn't see tomorrow" before striking him repeatedly in the head and genitals.

The man said Hatfield took off after he called 911.

The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

After searching the area, troopers returned to the victim's home where Hatfield was seen walking through the front yard.

Hatfield then took off around the side of the home and was later found trying to hide inside a pickup truck parked behind the house.

Hatfield was taken to Southwestern Regional Jail where she is being held on a $1 million bond.
