Accused Russian Spy Appears To Have Reached Plea Deal With Authorities

Maria Butina

Alleged Russian spy Maria Butina appears to have reached a plea deal with federal authorities according to court documents. Federal prosecutors and Butina's defense attorneys released a joint filing which said that the case against Butina has been resolved. They asked a judge to schedule a change of plea hearing this week.

“The parties have resolved this matter, and the Defendant Maria Butina remains in custody,” they wrote.

Butina was indicted in July on charges that she was acting as an agent of the Russian government and attempting to infiltrate American political organizations in an effort to advance Russian interests.

Butina has been held in solitary confinement after a judge refused to grant her bail over fears she would flee to Russia.
