President Donald Trump appeared in the Rose Garden at the White House on Thursday to unveil details for his long-anticipated immigration plan that he says would "transform America's immigration system into the pride of our nation and the envy of the modern world."
"We're here on this very beautiful spring day in the Rose Garden to unveil our plan to create a fair, modern and lawful system of immigration for the United States," Trump told reporters. "And it is about time."
Trump said his immigration plan was" pro-American, pro-immigrant, and pro-worker."
"Our plan achieves two critical goals. First, it stops illegal immigration and fully secures the border and second it establishes a new legal immigration system that protects American wages, promotes American values, and attracts the best and brightest from all around the world. The proposal begins with the most complete and effective border security package ever assembled by our country or any other country for that matter."
The president contrasted his plan with that of Democrats which he said would lead to "lawless chaos."
"Democrats are proposing open borders, lower wages, and frankly lawless chaos," he said in the Rose Garden. "We are proposing an immigration plan that puts the jobs, wages and safety of American workers first."
Senate Republicans were briefed on Trump's plan on Tuesday with some senators reportedly "underwhelmed" by the proposal.
"Right now, we're working with Sen. Graham and I know he's been working with Customs and Border (Protection) on how to deal with the immediate crisis," a senior administration official told CNN. "This would solve the immediate crisis. But this is obviously a much heavier lift."
Trump said his plan is the first one that wasn't written by politicians and instead sought input from law enforcement professionals to make the southern border between the U.S. and Mexico "100% operationally secure."
"Our proposal builds upon our nation's rich history of immigration, while strengthening the bonds of citizenship that bind us together as a national family," said Trump during the Rose Garden unveiling ceremony.
