U.S. Breaks Global Daily Coronavirus Record With Nearly 100,000 New Cases

El Paso Imposes New Lockdown Measures As Coronavirus Infections Soar

The United States reported 99,321 new cases of coronavirus on Friday (October 30), the highest single-day total for any country since the beginning of the global pandemic. The previous daily record was held by India, which reported 97,894 cases in a single day on September 17.

With nearly 100,000 new cases, the United States has topped nine million cases of COVID-19. The U.S. reported more than 1,000 deaths on Friday, bringing the death toll above 230,000.

On Friday, Iowa became the 31st state in the month of October to report a record number of cases in a single day. As the number of cases continues to surge across the country, so has the number of hospitalized patients. According to data from the COVID Tracking Project, there were 46,688 patients in the hospital on Friday, the highest total since August 13.

Health experts are worried that the pandemic is only going get worse in the coming weeks.

"The 100,000 cases yesterday two weeks from now will start to translate into massive numbers of deaths," Dr. Jonathan Reiner, a professor of medicine at George Washington University, told CNN. "So we're going to see not just cases continue to escalate, but we're going to see perhaps 2,000 deaths per day two or three weeks from now."
