A Texas man was detained after he tried to fight a police robot. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice said that the Texas Anti-Gang unit was dispatched to a Days Inn in Lubbock to detain 39-year-old Felix Delarosa, who was wanted for a parole violation for tampering with his electronic monitoring device.
Delarosa locked himself in his room and refused to leave. He fired several shots at officers, nearly striking one. Snipers were deployed and fired a shot Delarosa, striking him. Because officers knew he was still armed, they deployed a bomb-defusing robot to help detain him.
Delarosa tried to fight back against the robot, throwing a blanket over it, hoping that would stop it. When that failed, he fired several shots at the robot, which managed to dodge the shots. It then deployed tear gas into his room, forcing him to come outside and allowing officers to take him into custody.
Delarosa was transported to the hospital and then booked on a charge of aggravated assault against a public servant.
The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting, and the officers who fired shots have been placed on administrative leave.
