‘I remember thinking liberals were the good guys’: Dave Rubin on why he really left the left

TV personality, comedian, and host of ‘The Rubin Report’, Dave Rubin, joined Glenn Beck in the studio today to fill us in on how a lifelong liberal and onetime host on the ultra-progressive Young Turks Network, decided to leave the left. Rubin describes having an “awakening” when he recognized that the left no longer held to what he considered liberal issues such as freedom of speech and religion, racial justice, and the ability to live a truly free life without interference from a big government.

“There were a lot of trends that I didn’t like,” explained Rubin, noting a “constant rush to judge people’s motives, a constant attack on people instead of ideas, a constant distortion of truth.”

Rubin grew up in a strongly political, “mostly Democratic” family in New York. “I remember thinking Democrats and liberals were the good guys. They cared about the little guy, they cared about poor people, they cared about minorities … these are the good guys. The Republicans care about money, power, war, corporations, all of that stuff,” said Rubin. “At my formative years … I thought the system basically worked. I’ve changed on that now. I think the system is no longer in a place of working. And that, I think, will generally lead people to a more classical liberal or libertarian position … a limited government person.”
